When you turn on a hot water tap, cold water supply is directed to flow thru the heating unit. The pressure of the cold water running through the pipes turns on the heater (electrical or gas powered) and the water is warmed. When you turn off the tap, the heater shuts down until the next time you turn on a hot water tap.

A tankless water heater on the other hand is small, handy, and takes up less space in your home. Also the installation process is much easier and faster.
